Meet Kormákur Arthursson – Founder of Turmeric Sports

The Story

To introduce myself, my name is Kormákur and I am the founder of Turmeric Sports. So this turmeric adventure started when I was a basketball player in Iceland, where I’m originally from. I was constantly battling minor aches and pains as well as muscle and joint soreness during heavy training periods.

What I used to do when I was feeling particularly sore was to just take an anti-inflammatory drug like Advil or Ibuprofen to reduce the muscle soreness and make me feel better because the soreness could last for days.

I didn’t think anything of it until I was randomly wandering through the internet and came across an article about the effects of anti-inflammatory drugs on the body and was truly stunned about what I read and decided to do some digging.

Could something that I thought was pretty safe actually have these bad effects on my kidneys and digestive system? Long story short… Yes”.

In fact, I found that it’s estimated that over 100.000 people are hospitalized every year in the US because of the bad effects of anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen and Advil.

Athletes are especially at risk if they are using anti-inflammatory drugs with exercise. Mix an Advil with physical exertion and dehydration, and you can easily overwhelm your kidneys.

About Curcumin

Now I was still getting sore so I had to find something else to help me recover and I finally found it, in a root that had been used for thousands of years in many parts of the world for healing, called turmeric.

Turns out it’s not just the spice that gives curry it’s yellow colour, but there is an active compound in turmeric called curcumin”.

The Benefits

There are over 6000 peer-reviewed studies on the benefits of curcumin but I found that unfortunately there was a big problem with curcumin. The body had trouble absorbing it and to make matters worse, it was only about 2% – 4% of the turmeric root itself.

I did the math and to get the minimum effective dose of curcumin to have any measurable effect I would need to eat over 18 teaspoons of ground turmeric a day”.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love turmeric, but I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy! I went on a journey of unlocking the true power of turmeric and I want to share it with as many as I can.

We deserve to live our lives to the fullest, be happy and pursue our goals full of energy, passion and joy. That’s why I started this and that’s what keeps us going.
