Most of us know turmeric as the yellow spice that gives curry its bright orange/yellow color but with over 6000 peer-reviewed studies proving its incredible effects on the human body and performance, it’s no wonder thousands of athletes are turning to this incredible root for faster recovery as well as reduced muscle and joint soreness.

Turmeric Sports is specifically designed to maximize the effects of turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, which is responsible for its incredible benefits for athletes.

What Is Turmeric?

It is made from the roots of a very pretty flower that originally grows in Southeast Asia and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.

For the past few decades, western medicine has become increasingly interested in the plant with over 6000 studies published about its effects. This makes turmeric one of the most studied spice in the world!

Research has shown that it has properties that can help the body in all kinds of different ways! It supports healthy cell metabolism and regeneration, improves blood circulation and even helps the kidneys detox the body.

Benefits For Athletes

Now this is where things get interesting. One of the active compounds in turmeric, an antioxidant called curcumin, is one the most powerful antioxidant known in the plant kingdom and everyone that is physically active should know about.

The reason being that it has incredible anti-inflammatory benefits. The muscle soreness and joint aches you feel after workouts are a form of inflammation in the body. Your muscles and joints swell up and you can feel stiff and sore for days.

Everyone that has gone hard consistently in the gym knows this pain. And this is what curcumin tackles.

Curcumin also stimulates muscle regeneration so it provides a double effort to muscle recovery, by lowering the inflammation and then building the muscles and joints back up.

Additionally it has been found to stimulate growth of new neurons in the brain and thereby working against the effects of stress, keeping our brain clear and giving us better sleep.

BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH TURMERIC

Unfortunately It’s not enough to just add turmeric to cooking or take turmeric in capsules. It turns out that curcumin is only about 2-4% of the turmeric root itself and the body can sometimes have trouble absorbing curcumin as well.

This can lead to it being very difficult to get enough curcumin into the body for athletes to experience the benefits.

We managed to solve that problem however and created Turmeric Sports, to make sure that athletes would truly be able to enjoy the benefits of this amazing root.

Here is how we do it:

We only use pure curcumin, extracted from specially selected turmeric roots and patented science to enhance its bioavailability, which means it has much bigger impact on your body.

We also add black pepper extract to the complex, which has shown to increase the body’s absorption of curcumin of up to 2000%!

And we don’t just stop there. We also add MSM, B6&B12 vitamins as well as Omega 3 Fatty Acids that work beautifully with the curcumin so you can recover faster, get better sleep and reduce muscle and joint soreness as well as overall aches and pains!

So we recommend you give Turmeric Sports a try today. You will be glad you did!

How Turmeric is Changing the Game

Why world champions and weekend warriors alike are turning to turmeric

The Power of Turmeric

We all want to grow, be better today than we were yesterday. We all have goals and dreams, things we want to achieve and do.

But if our bodies are not functioning at 100%, our sleep quality might be a bit poor, our energy is low and our brains feel foggy, everything is so much more difficult than it needs to be.

The reason might be that we’re under a lot of stress from our work life, family and ambitions and don’t have time to spend days at a nice retreat in the Caribbean to charge the batteries (although that does sound very nice)

Enter Turmeric

Turmeric is made from the roots of a very pretty flower that originally grows in South Asia. It has been used for thousands of years but is becoming increasingly recognized by both the medical and fitness communities for its amazing ability to boost energy, health and performance.

Turns out that there is an active compound found in turmeric called curcumin, which is the main source of most of it’s benefits.

There are over 6000 peer-reviewed studies on its powerful effects on the human body.

The Benefits

Below is a list of the benefits of turmeric. You can learn more about the science and research behind the powers of turmeric here

Detox

Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body.  Curcumin plays a powerful role in supporting the liver which helps it detox the blood, reduce inflammation and bloating.

When your liver is healthy and functioning properly, it gets rid of toxins effectively, so you feel more energised and healthy!

Boost Metabolism

According to peer-reviewed research from leading universities, curcumin, may be one of the most powerful substances when it comes to healthy fat loss and boosting metabolism.

A bounty of new research is now hitting the limelight that demonstrates how this powerful spice can actually serve to combat unwanted fat by conquering insulin resistance and blood glucose levels alike.

The fat-vanquishing nature of curcumin has even generated significant interest within the mainstream medical establishment.

Recover Faster

Curcumin speeds up muscle & joint recovery so you bounce back stronger than ever.

Curcumin supplementation could offer runners a way to halt the negative effects of DOMS and lead to improved training and performance, along with injury prevention.

Researches have found that curcumin supplementation causes a decrease in DOMS-related leg-muscle pain symptoms.

Curcumin also lowered a blood marker for muscle damage and even reduced inflammation which implies that curcumin may help with muscle repair.

Less Stress

Boosts BDNF levels that work against the negative effects of stress in the body and brain.

Curcumin actually alleviates the effects of stress by blocking stress-induced decreases in BDNF and even increasing BDNF levels.

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a nerve growth factor found in the brain and is naturally produced for neuron protection, new neuron growth and the creation of new synapses.

However, if you’re under a lot of constant stress (like most of us are) BDNF production is inhibited and your ability to evolve and grow as well as your mental alertness and overall health are negatively impacted.

By supporting these processes, curcumin helps protect your brain from stress and makes you feel sharp and ready to tackle the world!

Improves Mental Performance & Sleep

Curcumin improves sleep, improves clarity, your mood and increases focus by promoting growth of healthy neurons.

Researchers have found that curcumin enhances brain chemicals such as noradrenalin and serotonin, and increases the production of dopamine. These normal chemicals in our body are known mood elevators.

Resulting in better sleep, less negative impact of stress, more clarity, better mood and increased focus!

Turmeric Sports brings you the full power of this amazing root so you can boost your energy and health naturally.

Everything you need to know to workout the day after a night out!

Don’t have time? Download the Hangover Cheat Sheet now FOR FREE!

Unless you are like the motivational powerhouse Lewis Howes (see what I did there?) and don’t touch alcohol, there is about 100% chance you’ve been in this scenario:

It started with happy hour, a few turned into many, and when the tequila is starting to pour, you begin to realise you might not be able to make that run or workout you had planned the following day. The day after drinking workout (or the DAD workout for short) has challenged us all.

not stop drinking

We’ve all been there, but fear not! We’ve been far and wide in search of nutrition, foods and steps you can take to get you to lace up those shoes, and join Lewis in the gym next weekend!  Before we reveal the 9 Natural hangover cures that really work, here are a few facts you need to know.

Hangover fact: one of the best ways to get rid of a hangover is actually to move your body and sweat the toxins out! In an article on Active.com about running with a hangover, Sarah Wassner Flynn (@athletemoms) explains that getting your blood pumping helps flush out the toxins in the system.

“Running or any exercise helps regulate the cytochromes within your cells” Dr. Gina Sirchio, a Chicago-based physician whose client list includes marathoners and ultra-runners, told Sarah. When cytochromes are regulated, aerobic energy production is accelerated Sarah explains.

Alcohol is always going to take its toll on the body

No matter what pre-emptive methods we take, alcohol is always going to take its toll on our bodies. I’m a huge fan of anything containing tequila but the fact still remains that alcohol is a neurotoxin. Putting a toxin into our body is always going to have some effects.

In fact, according to the American College of Sports Medicine, everything from your aerobic power to your psychomotor skills are adversely affected by five or more alcoholic beverages in one night, which can affect brain and body activities for up to three days.

BUT, We are going to figure out together how to be tactical and minimise these effects to get the best of both worlds – Tequila AND Crossfit, Cosmo AND Running!

Drinking tactics to reduce hangover

To master the art of avoiding hangovers we need to look at how you drink as well. We all know that the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink less but we aren’t here for that.

We want to know how we can knock’em down, dance aggressively with no respect for other people’s personal space and chat to random people in a club’s bathroom and still be able to hold the commitment we set ourselves for working out the next day.

ross

The thing is, we can be tactical about how we put this toxin in our body to maximise the fun and minimise the bad effects.

Not all Spirits are created equal

It turns out that in order to avoid hangovers, it really matters what type of alcohol you decide to drink. Why you ask?

scotchWhen ethanol (alcohol) is produced by sugar-fermenting yeasts, side products called congeners are formed as well (5).

Congeners are toxic chemicals, other than ethanol itself, formed in small amounts when alcohol is produced. Well known congeners include methanol, isopentanol and acetone (6, 7).

Drinks with high amounts of congeners increase the intensity of hangovers compared to the ones that have low amount of congeners. Makes sense right? The fewer toxic chemicals we put in our body, the less the reaction becomes. Powerful stuff.

Drinks that are high in congeners include:

  • Cognac
  • Whiskey
  • Red Wine
  • Dark Tequila
  • Dark Rum

Bourbon whiskey is exceptionally high in congeners. Unfortunately for me, the tequila lover, I should actively try to avoid certain types tequila if I want to be able to #JoinLewis.

On the other hand, colorless drinks like vodka, gin and rum, contain low levels of congeners. In fact, vodka almost doesn’t contain any congeners at all! (5).

For all you beer lovers out there, alcohol specialist Dr. Thomas Stuttaford explained the relationship with congeners and beer in an article with Men’s Health:

“The congeners are the things that give beer its taste, and there are more of them in dark beers, hence their superior flavour.”

This means that a light lager will be a better option than a dark stout

Try not to mix it up too much

mixing alcohol

If you start blending dark liquors, such as mixing red wine with brandy, you’ll be ingesting different varieties of congeners from both, setting yourself up for a worse hangover than if you’d stuck with only one type of spirit.

Conclusion: When you have a workout the next day, stay away from dark liquors like whiskey and cognac and opt for clear alcoholic drinks like vodka and gin instead. With beer, keep away from dark beer and opt for lager and ‘lighter’ beers instead.

Now that you are armed with what to drink and not to drink, let’s dive into the 9 natural hangover cures that work!

1. Pears!

pearsThere is no shortage of alleged hangover cures, but now science is actually backing one up.

How someone got the idea for this experiment is beyond me but I’m very thankful that they did!

Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (“CSIRO”), announced last month on its blog that in its research with Horticulture Innovation Australia, it made an unlikely discovery.

Pears can lower alcohol levels, preventing hangovers before they even start.

If consumed in advance of the alcohol, pears, and specifically Korean pear juice, the researchers say, “significantly reduced” hangover symptoms compared to a placebo drink.

The biggest impact was seen in the subjects’ ability to concentrate, says Professor Manny Noakes, the project’s lead researcher.

It works, Noakes explained, because the pears affect the enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, helping the body metabolize and eliminate alcohol or even inhibit its absorption. “In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for hangover symptoms,” says Noakes.

These were just preliminary studies however and a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on the topic still needs to be done. But in the meantime, there is no harm in trying this out.

Conclusion: Try to keep a stock of Korean pear juice in fridge or nearby and drink up before going out.

2. Throw the alarm clock out of the room

alarm clock hammer“Independent of any other effect alcohol might have, sleep disruption causes you to feel worse the next day and causes cognitive disruption the next day as well.” says Gantt Galloway, Senior Scientist in the Addiction & Pharmacology Research Laboratory at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute.

I think this is common knowledge but it’s still important to mention. When you are sleeping, the liver is working overtime to process and get rid of the alcohol in your bloodstream. It’s important work and we shouldn’t interrupt it by forcing an early morning workout. Toss out the alarm clock and let your body wake up naturally if it’s an option.

Conclusion: Let your body wake up naturally and don’t try to force an early morning workout.

3. Stretch

yogamanSome say doing yoga poses and stretching might actually help with easing the hangover symptoms. Although there is no scientific evidence for this yet,  Ashtanga yoga has long been viewed as a way to flush the body through with blood and oxygen, ultimately detoxifying the body.

Or as Scott Harig, who teaches yoga at Manhattan’s Pure Yoga said in an interview with Scott Christian at Esquire;  “think of it like twisting a rag to get the water out of it, yoga helps get out the toxins and increase blood flow.”

If you are dead serious about getting the most out of a DAD workout, It might be something worth experimenting with, just watch out for the headstand. That’s definitely not a good idea.

How about doing a few poses as soon as you feel like it or just include them in your warm up?

Here are 7 Ashtanga yoga poses from Scott Christian (@scottchristian1) and Scott Harig specifically intended for hangovers that you can try out.

4. B vitamins before and during drinking

bvitaminsNow, here is a chance to take your hangover recovery game to the next level. Be crazy tactical and always have B vitamins on standby in case you go ahead and turn up. Alcohol depletes B vitamins from your system, which can make you feel worse the next day.

These vitamins are essential to mental and emotional well being.

Taking a 50 milligram B complex vitamin before you start drinking and another one while you’re drinking is a game changer to lessen your hangover in the morning.

Pro tip: Try adding peanut butter to the DAD breakfast – it will give you a one-two punch of detoxifying B vitamins and protein.

5. Add Ginger to the DAD (Day After Drinking) morning

ginger teaAnyone who has ever soothed an upset stomach with a glass of ginger ale knows that ginger is a helpful digestive. The ginger root contains chemicals called gingerols and shogaols.

When using ginger to treat upset stomach, these chemicals relax the intestinal tract, preventing motion sickness and relieving the nausea that often accompanies a good old fashioned hangover.

I find it best to make a turmeric and ginger tea to sip as the morning winds on but the ultra tough that are still feeling a bit adventurous and want to hold on to some of the epic atmosphere of the night before can also take a shot of pressed ginger. It’s incredibly healthy but beware, it’s heavily concentrated and not for the faint hearted.

Pro tip: Try adding turmeric as well for detoxifying the liver. I drink ginger & turmeric tea because of its incredible health benefits. It also helps relieve muscle and joint pain after workouts. Check out this article about the incredible benefits of turmeric for athletes

6. Have a tablespoon of olive oil

olive-oilThis may sound a little gross, but many Mediterranean cultures swear by this hangover prevention technique. Basically, it’s the same principle as eating fatty food before drinking – the fat in the olive oil will limit your body’s absorption of alcohol.

So if you can stomach it, swallow a tablespoon of olive oil before you head out for the night

Pro tip: Alternatively, you can increase your intake of olive oil less directly by dipping some crusty bread into it, or drizzling it over a salad.

7. Bananas!

love-banana-minionsOne fruit (aside from Korean pear juice) that deserves its own bullet point is the banana—especially if you’ve (yikes!) thrown up. It’s the obvious choice to get potassium into your system fast, plus bananas are gentle on the stomach. What’s more: they’ll provide necessarily electrolytes lost during heaving drinking.

8. Honey

Honey helps the body break down alcohol

Honey helps the body break down alcohol

Fun fact: According to the Smithsonian, modern archeologists, excavating ancient Egyptian tombs, have often found something unexpected amongst the tombs’ artifacts: pots of honey, thousands of years old, and yet still preserved. Apparently honey doesn’t spoil!

Anyway, because of its antioxidant properties, honey neutralizes the toxins created by consuming alcohol.

Dr. John Emsley, UK Popular Science writer and chemistry academic, claims the natural fructose in honey helps the body rapidly metabolize alcohol.

According to Dr. Emsley, “the fructose in honey is an essential compound that helps the body break down alcohol into harmless by-products.” The body uses the fructose found in honey to convert the acetaldehyde made during alcohol metabolism into acetic acid, a substance that is “burned up naturally by the body.”

Pro tip: Add a teaspoon of honey to that ginger turmeric tea you just made!

9. Eat a high protein meal

BaconEver wondered why you crave a generous plate of bacon and eggs for breakfast the morning after a big night out?

I always thought that I was craving that greasy bacon and eggs because of the grease and fat but it turns out that it’s also because of the protein.

In the body, proteins are broken down into individual amino acids – the substance that helps detoxify your liver and, in turn, assists your recovery.

To ingest protein before knocking back the tequila will also help because it slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream which lowers the pressure we put on the liver.

Pro tip: If you didn’t it a high protein meal before drinking, pick up a bag of cashews or other form of nuts. From a handful, or about 18 cashews you should get between 4 to 5 grams of protein, plus they are also very high on fiber!

The Workout itself:

Alright, you’ve woken up without an alarm clock, did all the preparation yesterday, are sipping on turmeric and ginger tea with a tablespoon of honey and are about to put on your yoga pants to do some serious hangover stretching.

olympic lifting

You’re doing great and you deserve to pat yourself on the back. It’s not easy to be a responsible athlete by day and party lion by night.

Now before you work out, try to get in a good meal about an hour before the workout. Some oats, nuts, fruits and berries are good for replacing the energy you lost through your vocal chords while you were trying to keep up a conversation over the usually incredibly loud music last night.

During the workout

Try to stay away from high intensity interval training and hot yoga. We have to accept that we’re probably not going to be setting any personal records today.

Opt for stable cardio or scaling back on reps and weights because it will be easier to overexert yourself, your body is still trying to get rid of the toxic goodness you drank yesterday and make sure you DRINK WATER! After before and during every exercise, set and preferably rep.

Pro tip: Try adding bits of oranges to your water bottle. It tastes nice and gets you a little extra vitamin C kick.

Conclusion:

Hopefully you are now armed with all the information you need to become the hangover avoidance master you know you can be. It’s time for you stop bowing down to the tequila gods, offering your tribute to them through the porcelain portal and giving up on your hopes of #JoinLewis in the gym on the weekend.

Enjoy life, go out with friends but be tactical so you are able to keep your fitness schedule.

Most of us know turmeric as the yellow spice that gives curry its bright orange/yellow color. Most of us have even heard somewhere that it’s pretty good for us but what is it, and what does it do?

WHAT IS TURMERIC?

It is made from the roots of a very pretty flower that originally grows in Southeast Asia and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.

For the past few decades, western medicine has become increasingly interested in the plant because of its incredible health benefits with over 6000 peer-reviewed studies published about its effects!

5 benefits for Female Athletes

Now this is where things get interesting. One of the active ingredients in turmeric, and every female athlete should know about, is called curcumin.

Curcumin is one of the most powerful antioxidant known in the plant kingdom and its health benefits are truly amazing!

1. Decreases Pain and Cramps During Periods

Periods can be incredibly painful for many women and the last thing you want to do is to go hit the gym to work out.

Curcumin is known to decrease intensity and pain experienced during periods and its antispasmodic action can also help with menstrual cramps. [1] While there are many medicines available today for this problem, using curcumin can provide a great natural and powerful choice!

2. Helps with fat burning and reduces weight gain

Been hitting the gym for weeks but having trouble shaving of those last few pounds?

More than dozen peer-reviewed studies have found that curcumin intake is directly associated with increased fat loss and decreased insulin issues.

Curcumin helps slow down the division of fat cells in your body making it harder to gain weight and put on those unwanted pounds. [2]

3. Reduces Muscle and Joint Pain

The muscle soreness and joint soreness you feel after workouts are a form of inflammation in the body. Your muscles and joints swell up and you can feel stiff and sore for days.

Everyone that has gone hard consistently in the gym knows this pain. It’s so hard to get out of bed when your body is aching from the day before. And this is what curcumin tackles. [3]

It basically works the same way as anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers like Advil, Motrin and Ibuprofen but without the nasty side effects these drugs can have on our bodies. [4]

4. Speeds Up Recovery

This is probably the most powerful impact curcumin can have on athletes. Curcumin has a muscle strengthening effect, and this is most visible in muscles that are recovering.

According to an animal study done at Emory University, curcumin can speed up muscle recovery by at least a factor of five. US army researchers have also stumbled upon this incredible muscle-recovery effect of curcumin. [8] [9]

5. Detox

One of the best ways to get rid of toxic overload in our bodies is by eating foods that help support the body’s natural method of eliminating the onslaught of chemicals we are exposed to in our air, water, soil, and food.

Curcumin can uniquely assist the enzymes that are responsible for flushing out known dietary toxins. The result is enhanced protection against liver damage, and even regeneration of affected liver cells.

When the liver is supported through the use of curcumin, it can also help to detox the blood and reduce inflammation!

BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH TURMERIC

Sounded too good to be true? Unfortunately turmeric has one major problem. It turns out that curcumin is only about 2-4% of the turmeric root itself and the body can sometimes have trouble absorbing curcumin as well.

This can lead to it being very difficult to get enough curcumin into the body for the desired benefits.

But we managed to solve that problem! We created the TurmericSports Complex, to make sure that people and athletes would truly be able to enjoy the benefits of this amazing root.

Here is how we do it:

We only use pure curcumin, extracted from specially selected turmeric roots and patented science to enhance its bioavailability, which means it has much more impact on your body.

We also add black pepper extract to the complex, which has shown to increase the body’s absorption of curcumin of up to 2000%!

And we don’t just stop there. We also add MSM, B6&B12 vitamins as well as omega 3 fatty acids that work beautifully with the curcumin so you can recover faster, get better beauty sleep and reduce muscle and joint soreness as well as overall aches and pains!

Extra powerful

So we recommend you give Turmeric Sports a try. You will be glad you did!

What is inflammation?

Swelling shoulder InflammationInflammation is your body’s natural defence system. When you suffer an injury your immune system rushes in there with white blood cells and chemicals to fight off infections and protect the area to help it heal.

When it’s a one-time thing, inflammation is nothing to worry about; in fact it’s a necessary tool for the body to heal itself. However, the problem arises when inflammation becomes chronic.

Chronic, low level inflammation can wreak havoc on almost any process and system in the body. The results can manifest in all kinds of different things like allergies, autoimmune disorders, depression and even Alzheimer’s

Even though the modern human lives a more comfortable and better than any human has in history, the modern lifestyle can put some stress on our systems that can cause chronic inflammation.

Psychological stress like money problems, social isolation and doing a job we hate can maintain chronic inflammation in the body.

Eating processed food we are sensitive to that irritates the gut and stomach lining is another source of inflammation for example.

Here are the 7 foods are proven to have incredibly powerful natural anti inflammatory effects

1. Cinnamon

cinnamon sticksCinnamon is a popular and sweet spice used quite often in the modern kitchen. But cinnamon is more than just a delicious additive in our cakes.

Studies have found that cinnamon has a host of compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can lessen the likelihood of cellular damage and chronic disease.

Try adding more cinnamon to your diet by trying this amazing cinnamon-toasted almond recipe from Krista at Joyful Healthy Eats!

2. Dark leafy greens

dark leafy greensStudies have suggested that vitamin E may play a key role in protecting the body from pro-inflammatory molecules called cytokines—and one of the best sources of this vitamin is dark green veggies, such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and collard greens.

Dark greens and cruciferous vegetables also tend to have higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals—like calcium, iron, and disease-fighting phytochemicals—than those with lighter-coloured leaves.

Here is a scrumptious recipe from Popular Paleo that guarantees everyone will finish their broccoli!

3. Turmeric

turmeric curcuminNow we are not exactly impartial here, but the research speaks for itself. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years but is becoming increasingly recognised by the medical community to be one of the most powerful anti-inflammatories in the world.

An active ingredient in turmeric, a compound called curcumin, is one of the most powerful natural anti inflammatory compounds in the world. Studies have shown that curcumin is even more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil and Ibuprofen and does so without the side effects prolonged use of these drugs can cause.

Curcumin is especially great for those that are physically active and athletes. US army researchers found that curcumin was able to speed up muscle recovery by a factor of five! Curcumin has also been proven to reduce muscle and joint pain.

4. Ginger

gingerAromatic, pungent and spicy, ginger adds a special flavour and zest to Asian stir-fries and many fruit and vegetable dishes.

Ginger is another spice that’s been used for centuries for inflammation and pain, to soothe sore throats and combat general aches and fatigue. Ginger attacks inflammation through the action the active compounds of gingerols, shogaols, and paradols.

Is stir-fry your thing? Try this ginger chicken stir fry recipe from the Little Spice Jar blog!

5. Fish oil

fish oilThe Omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA that are found in fish oil are vital to almost every function in the body.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ranks Omega-3’s among the most important essential nutrients out there today.

They are found for example in cold water fish and shellfish and impact almost every function in the body. They reduce inflammation and are vital to your cell metabolism.

According to researchers from Harvard and the University of Southern California, macrophages, which are a type of white blood cell, use DHA to produce maresin, which acts like a “switch” that turns off inflammation.

You can either supplement with extra fish oil or just add, you guessed it, more fish to your diet!

Is Turmeric and Curcumin the Same?

This is a very common question that many people have.

There is huge buzz surrounding turmeric and curcumin right now and justifiably so. With all these proven and amazing health benefits, turmeric and curcumin have truly become the talk of the town.

But what is the difference?

So Turmeric (botanical name: Curcuma longa) is a very pretty tropical flower that is originally from South Asia.

Turmeric Flower - Curcuma longa

The roots of the flower are dried and ground into what we know as the spice that gives curry its yellow/orange colour and has been used for thousands of years in cooking and as a medicine.

Curcumin, on the other hand, is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric and is responsible for most of the amazing benefits that make turmeric so special.

These terms (turmeric and curcumin) are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is basically just a spice but curcumin is a chemical compound found in that spice.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND WHY SHOULD I TAKE IT?

Turmeric may just be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. Below are 5 reasons why supplementing with curcumin is a good idea!

1. CURCUMIN IS A POWERFUL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND PAIN KILLER

It is now believed that chronic inflammation plays a major role in almost all chronic western diseases, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer and various other degenerative conditions.

Turns out that Curcumin is an incredibly strong anti-inflammatory.

Studies have shown that curcumin can even perform better than many anti-inflammatory drugs, including Advil. But manages to do so without the side effects that anti-inflammatory drugscan cause and hospitalise over 107.000 Americans a year, according to a study published in the American Journal of Medicine.

Now, most healthy people aren’t going to have to be hospitalised by taking a few Advils, but long-term use can cause very bad side effects like gastrointestinal bleeding and even kidney failure.

Why would we want to put stuff in our bodies that has this kind of effect on it?

2. CURCUMIN CAN SLOW DOWN AGING PROCESSES

Oxidative damage is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging. Anti-oxidants help protect our bodies from oxidation. These are chemical compounds that can usually be found in dark green vegetables, blueberries, and in turmeric!

Curcumin is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the plant kingdom. I know, it’s scary how one compound can do so many things, but this is one of the reasons why it’s the topic of over 6000 peer-reviewed studies!

3. HELPS WITH FAT BURNING AND REDUCES WEIGHT GAIN

Been hitting the gym for weeks but having trouble shaving of those last few pounds?

More than dozen peer-reviewed studies have found that curcumin intake is directly associated withincreased fat loss and decreased insulin issues.

Curcumin helps slow down the division of fat cells in your body making it harder to gain weightand put on those unwanted pounds.

4. SPEEDS UP RECOVERY

CAN I GET ENOUGH CURCUMIN FROM TURMERIC?

Unfortunately turmeric has one major problem. It turns out that curcumin is only about 2-4% of the turmeric root itself and the body can sometimes have trouble absorbing curcumin as well.

This can lead to it being very difficult to get enough curcumin into the body for the desired benefits.

THE SOLUTION TO THE TURMERIC PROBLEM

We created the Turmeric Sports Complex, to make sure that people and athletes would be able totruly enjoy the benefits of this amazing root.

So I (Kormakur, the founder of Turmeric Sports) was a basketball player in Iceland and like most athletes playing high-level contact sports, I was constantly battling minor aches and pains as well as muscle and joint soreness during heavy training periods.

What I used to do when I was feeling particularly sore after days of tough training was to just take an anti-inflammatory drug like Advil or Ibuprofen to reduce the muscle soreness, which could last for days.

I didn’t think anything of it until I came across an article about the effects of anti-inflammatory drugs on the body and I was truly stunned because I had no idea about these side effects.

When I started to use turmeric I realized that it was very hard for me to get the necessary amount of curcumin into my system. So I set out on a journey to create a turmeric supplement that was suitable even for athletes that were suffering from heavy inflammation and muscle pain!

HERE IS HOW WE DO IT:

We only use pure curcumin, extracted from specially selected turmeric roots and patented science to enhance its absorption, which means it has much more impact on your body.

We also add black pepper extract to the complex, which has shown to increase the body’s absorption of curcumin of up to 2000%!

And we don’t just stop there. We also add MSM, B6&B12 vitamins as well as omega 3 fatty acidsthat work beautifully with the curcumin so you can recover faster, get better beauty sleep and reduce muscle and joint soreness as well as overall aches and pains!

EXTRA POWERFUL

So we recommend you give Turmeric Sports a try. You will be glad you did!
